Each Wednesday, join us in the meeting room from 4:00pm-5:00pm for a session of building with LEGO and Duplos! We supply the LEGO and Duplo pieces, and you supply the imagination! Read to a Dog develops reading skills and confidence as you share a book with a dog. Bring your own book or choose one from our collection!
This program is targeted to children 5 years old and up who have some ability to read aloud on their own. Sign up at the Information Desk up to 30 minutes before the program, for a 10-minute one-on-one reading session. First come, first served. Every second and fourth Thursday of the month. : No Shelf Control Book Club (Grades 4-6)
If you are in grades 4, 5 or 6 and love to read and have fun talking about books and characters, No Shelf Control is the place for you! This month, we'll discuss "I’m OK” by Patti Kim, the story of twelve-year-old Korean-American OK Lee, who feels responsible for helping his family financially after a tragedy, but struggles to find a way to start a successful business. You can borrow a copy (with a specially prepared reading guide just for our group) from the Connie Morella Library; just ask at the Check Out or Information Desks for the September book for No Shelf Control. : Create a Single Panel Cartoon
Explore various ways to generate ideas for a humorous one-panel cartoon as you create wordless cartoons and cartoons with captions. Learn to combine your drawing and writing skills to communicate a funny situation to an audience. We will look at various professional cartoonists’ work for inspiration.

: Oil Painting 101: Abstract Landscape
Are you new to oil painting or want to refresh yourself on the basics? Join us for a 2-hour session where each participant will learn the fundamentals of oil painting. Our experienced Instructors will lead you through the basics of oil painting, from brush techniques to color mixing and more! This class is recommended for ages 14+.

Three standard-bearers of West African musical traditions come together to celebrate Mandé Sila: the way of the Mandingo empire, symbolizing languages, cultures, music, and the entire organology of West Africa. The Writer’s Center welcomes Plamen Press and the Alan Cheuse International Writers Center for the launch of Plamen’s latest publication, People and Trees, by Azerbaijani writer and playwright Akram Aylisli, translated by Katherine E. : Our Earth Book Discussion Club - With Kim Stanley Robinson
Continuing our attention to Ministry for the Future, we will be having a virtual conversation with acclaimed author Kim Stanley Robinson, who states: "We are living through historic times — the most widely tumultuous period of transformation and catastrophe for the planet since the end of World War II, with overlapping political, social, economic, and ecological crises….. that threaten to turn the coming decades into hell on Earth”. He will be joined by Herb Simmens, city planner and author of A Climate Vocabulary of the Future, who proposes a Futures Commission at every level of government. A Futures Commission, made up of a broad cross section of the community, and in particular, our unrepresented young people, as well as those most vulnerable to climate change, would enable a new awareness and creative responses to the worsening challenges and opportunities ahead. : Rock Creek Park, Your Wild Home - Panel Discussion
Rock Creek is central to our community’s quality of life. Join this panel discussion, moderated by Representative Jamie Raskin, to learn more about the connections between green space and our well-being. We will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the publication of Melanie Choukas-Bradley’s “A Year in Rock Creek,” which vividly illustrates the power of a nearby wild home.
This program will take place amidst the artwork of Sophia McCrocklin, celebrating the fragile forests of Rock Creek Park, on display at The Writers Center’s Joram Piatigorsky Gallery in Bethesda from September 12 – December 6.
