The
2010 Bethesda Painting Awards will be juried by Carolyn K. Carr, Mark Karnes and Erling Sjovold.
Carolyn K. Carris the Deputy Director and Chief Curator of the National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. She received her Doctorate from Case Western Reserve University, Master of Arts from Oberlin College and Bachelor of Arts from Smith College. She was Chief Curator at the Akron Art Museum in Ohio and has taught art history at Kent State University and the University of Akron. She is the author of several books and is currently researching Capital Portraits: Treasures from Washington Private Collections, 1730—2000 , an exhibition focusing on family portraits in private Washington, D.C. collections.
Mark Karnes received his Master of Fine Arts in painting from Yale University in 1972 and his Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting from Philadelphia College of Art. He has received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Maryland State Arts Council as well as a Fulbright-Hayes grant for study in Florence, Italy. His work has been widely exhibited both nationally and internationally and can be found in numerous private and museum collections, including the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. Karnes lives in Baltimore, MD, where he has taught drawing and painting at Maryland Institute College of Art since 1974.
Erling Sjovold is a painting professor at the University of Richmond. He received his Master of Fine Arts from the Art Institute of Chicago and Bachelor of Arts from the University of California, Berkeley. Sjovold has taught at Savannah College of Art and Design and Indiana University. He has received three residency awards and is a recent recipient of a Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Fellowship. Sjovold’s work has been exhibited nationally and he is currently preparing for an exhibition at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.
